Solar Design Drafter

About the Role

The Solar AutoCAD Design Drafter supports the solar design and engineering team by producing accurate, permit-ready solar PV drawings using AutoCAD. This role focuses on drafting, layout updates, and documentation based on provided design criteria, site survey data, and engineering direction for residential and commercial solar projects.

Key Responsibilities

Drafting and Plan Production

  • Draft solar PV plan sets in AutoCAD based on approved design criteria
  • Prepare roof layouts, site plans, electrical one-lines, and construction details
  • Apply standard company templates, layers, symbols, and notes
  • Revise drawings based on redlines, internal review, or AHJ corrections

Data and Site Review Support

  • Interpret site survey photos, measurements, and marked-up sketches
  • Accurately reflect roof planes, obstructions, setbacks, and equipment locations
  • Identify missing or unclear site data and request clarification

Code and Standard Application

  • Apply basic NEC, AHJ, and fire code requirements as directed
  • Ensure required labels, notes, and details are included in plan sets
  • Follow utility and permitting standards provided by the design or engineering team

Permitting and Documentation

  • Assemble permit-ready drawing packages for submission
  • Support permit resubmittals and correction responses
  • Maintain organized project files and revision tracking

Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with designers, engineers, and permitting staff
  • Support field teams by updating drawings based on as-built conditions
  • Communicate drafting questions or conflicts clearly and promptly

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, 2D drafting required
  • Experience drafting solar PV systems or construction drawings
  • Ability to follow design standards, redlines, and templates accurately
  • Strong attention to detail and consistency

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with solar equipment layouts such as modules, inverters, and combiner panels
  • Basic understanding of NEC and solar permitting requirements
  • Experience with residential or light commercial solar projects
  • Construction, drafting, or technical design background
